Tablelands & Fireflies
1030pm Tuesday night. Just had one of Ross and Lisa's friends over for some beers and dinner which was good fun. Had a real down pour for a while just after dark, but apparently this random, unpredictable, "liquid sunshine" has been going on this entire past year, so they're well and truly gettin' pretty sick of it! We've booked a trip up to Cape Tribulation for this weekend, Saturday and Sunday nights. We'll do some Jungle Surfing, amongst other things I'm sure! Really excited about that!
Yesterday, the three of us took a drive over to the Tablelands (flat mountains) and took in the breathtaking scenery, many waterfalls, and persevered through the rain and sunshine. It was a totally gorgeous day! Today Ross had to go back to work, so Lisa and I spent the day together. We went into town mid morning and I sorted out my bank account, then to wait out the crazy downpour we hit Target. Found some good bargains there so that was some fun times as always. After that it was time to check out the Crocodile Farm not 10mins out of town. They had Wallabies, Kangaroos, Emus, Cassowaries, Dingos, Water Buffaloes, Crocs, various different birds, snakes and other reptiles! 1pm was feeding time with the tour guide, so we went to a few of the crocs pens with the guy and he taught us more about crocs. He said he'd rather be in close contact with a croc than a Cassowary - wow! Those big colourful headed birds are deadly! And just a little tip - if you find yourself sinking in a boat somewhere where you know there's crocodiles, swim slowly and calmly to shore; not as fast as humanly possible. He demonstrated the reasoning behind this by moving his long wooden stick slowly around the croc's head in the water, versus slapping it hard against the water which resulted in the croc lunging out of the water into the air ready to attack. Prior to this tour, the staff brought out some pets... well, sort of pets. One was a baby croc (2yr old croc, about 45cm long with a taped snout), some variety of boa constrictor, and a joey. The red tailed black cockatoo Mr. Banks was also making an appearance! It was really neat to see all these animals for the first time.
Tonight I saw my first big brown house spider (harmless, apparently) and FIREFLIES!!!!!!!!!!!! They are gorgeous. The next few days will be low key till we leave on Saturday for the Daintree and Cape Tribulation. Beware of the Aussie sun, even if it's overcast! Good thing they have a big aloe vera plant.
Annnnnnnnnnnd, it's pouring down outside once again. :)
