Be Your Happiest Self!

"We have to consider what we human beings really are. We are not like machine-made objects. If we were merely mechanical entities, then machines themselves could alleviate all of our suffering and fulfill our needs. However, since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. Instead, we should consider our origins and nature to discover who we are what it is we require." - The Dalai Lama

I'm only 25 pages into my new book "In My Own Words - An Introduction to My Teachings and Philosophy" by His Holiness The Dalai Lama, and already I feel inspired to write about what I've read. This is gonna be good!

I want to talk about happiness. What is one thing that the entire human race has in common? We all just wanna be HAPPY. The Dalai Lama (The DL) believes that the purpose of life is to BE happy. Therefore, it is important to discover what will bring you the greatest degree of happiness. But sometimes easier said than done, I know.

Secondly, the DL says that no one is born free of the need for love. The need for human affection is in our blood. Luckily, giving this feeling of love benefits ourselves as much as others. We just have to put it into practice. The best time to practice is when you're feeling angry or mad, because then you have to work the hardest to control your emotions and take on a more compassionate attitude with reason and patience. This will always give you a more favourable outcome. Even if you don't like someone, you will both share the same desire for happiness, and you will both equally deserve to be happy.

"I believe that at every level of society, the key to a happier and more successful world is the growth of compassion." So, make LOVE AND COMPASSION, not WAR.

In conclusion - give this a go for a day and see how you feel:

Try to treat whomever you meet as an old friend. This should give you a genuine feeling of happiness. It is the practice of compassion.

Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside doesn't it?
